Members of the Alford family traveled by wagon train over the Oregon Trail to Hood River. Thence the emigrants floated down the Columbia River on flat boats. They spent their first winter in Oregon City, OR, after arriving 27 Oct 1850 from Clearside Co., MO, moving southward and lettling land claims in Linn Co., OR.

Richard Copeland Sr. lived with his father, John, in Surrey Co., N. Carolina
until abt. 1798 ( at age 24 ) when he evidently left home. He married Euphamie
abt. 1800 and his first child, James, was born in Virginia in 1802.

He migrated westward with his family and was in Belmont Co., Ohio when his
second child, Asa, was born in 1805. (INFO FROM WILL CO., ILLINOIS DEATH
CERTIFICATE FOR ASA COPELAND SHOWING BP TO BE OHIO) He remained in Belmont
Col. until abt 1818 when he moved to Coshocton Co., Ohio. He served during the
War of 1812 as a Sergeant in James Campbell's Company in Belmont Co., Ohio
company, Odd Battalion, Ohio Militia, commanded by Major Samuel Connell. In
1823, Richard subscribed for one student, probably Henry, in a school to be
held in the Methodist Meeting-House near William Coulter's in Perry Twp.,
Coshocton Co. Ohio, to be taught by John L. Meredith. Richard was living in
Perry Twp, Coshocton Co. in the 1820 Census in Newcastle Twp., Coshocton Co. in
the 1830 Census. He is not found in subsequent Census, so we presum he died c
1835.
